Since 1959, the northwest corner of Central Park has served as a space to honor past, present, and future veterans. Most recently the site of the Grinnell Veterans Memorial Building, the location has long stood as a symbol of remembrance. After the building was closed due to asbestos and later removed, the community came together to envision a new tribute: a bold, enduring monument that honors the past and inspires future generations.
Designed with extensive community input by 2022 Iowa Artist Fellow Joe Tuggle Lacina, the Grinnell Veterans Monument will be a 42-foot-tall steel sculpture in the shape of an unfurling American flag. The monument will be lit from within and include a walk-in space for reflection and remembrance.
The Grinnell Veterans Monument has benefitted from a sustained fundraising effort involving grants, private donations, and local funding. To date, $1.6 million has been secured for the project.
The monument is currently being constructed by Vector Custom Fabricating and will be installed in spring 2026, along with lighting and signage. The completion of the plaza is weather dependent, and will be finished either in spring/summer of 2026. The project is expected to open to the public in time for Independence Day 2026.
